John Scott ’41
John T. Scott, a resident of Sea Pines, Hilton Head Island, died on Friday, July 10, 2015 aged 95 following a brief illness. John was born in Somerville, NJ, August 16, 1919, to Walter and Elizabeth Scott. He attended Somerville High School and received a scholarship to Princeton University where he majored in Economics, graduating in 1941.
John was a devoted son of Princeton, a very active alumnus and loyal Princeton football fan for 74 years. John served as a Captain in the Air Medical Evacuation Squadron, US Army Air Force, overseas during WWII. In 1947, John married Dorothy Hall Scott of Somerville. In 1953, they made their home in Westfield NJ where they had four children. Dorothy died in 1983. He married Gloria Harlan in 1988.
John spent his career in Life Insurance, as General Manger of the NYC office of the Penn Mutual and President of NJ Life Insurance Company.
Following John's marriage to Gloria, the couple moved from Westfield to Sea Pines where John enjoyed golf at the Sea Pines Country Club.
Membership at Providence Presbyterian Church was an important part of John's life. He was an Elder and Clerk of Session, Chair of the Personnel and Nominating Committees. John was active in the Presbyterian Men of the Church and was honored to be selected "Man of the Year" in 2001. John founded the Christian Heritage Golf Breakfast in 1997, a prominent and inspirational event held annually during the tournament week. He served on the board of the South Coastal Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
John was a proud family man. He is survived by his wife Gloria, 3 children, 3 step-children, 12 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. His sister, eldest son, and a step-daughter predeceased him.
